Experience
Dr. You has broad expertise in intellectual property matters, including involvement in all phases of the preparation and prosecution of patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He advises a diverse clientele, including multinational corporations, small and medium enterprises, startup companies, universities, and institutes, on a wide range of intellectual property issues. He specializes in technologies including electronic circuits, computer hardware and software, electromechanical devices, electrical machinery, robotics, autonomous vehicles, security and cryptography, and e-commerce and Internet-related technologies.
Dr. You worked as a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as well as at the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), making him the first person to have served as a Patent Examiner in both countries.
Dr. You worked for Rabin & Berdo, where he prosecuted patent applications, provided intellectual property counseling, prepared patentability opinions for foreign clients, and handled patent licensing. He also worked for 5T International Patent Law Firm in Korea as a patent attorney, where he drafted and prosecuted patent applications, prepared appeal briefs, argued appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, prepared validity and infringement opinions, provided foreign filing advisory opinions, and participated in patent infringement litigation in a district court in Korea. Dr. You has experience in foreign practices, including overseeing the prosecution of numerous patent applications before the Japanese Patent Office, European Patent Office, Chinese Patent Office, and Taiwan Patent Office.
Dr. You served as a visiting scholar at the Cornell University Center for Technology Licensing and as a patent advisor and professor at the Technology Licensing Office of Inha University. While working at both universities, he interviewed inventors, evaluated invention disclosures, prepared joint research agreements, and licensed patented technologies. He also published a book titled "Technology Transfer of Cornell University."
